Steer Head Bearings

How do you know when you should replace your steer head bearings -- what is a tell tail sign.

Look at the races and if you see what appears to be bumps or hammer marks from the rollers it would be good to change both races and bearings. Properly maintained and not allowed to get loose, in reality they should last a lifetime.

Front end wobble is an indication of loose head bearings. Try the fall away test. On my 07 RG, with the front end off the ground you pull the left grip until the triple tree comes up against the fork stop. Quickly release the handle bar. The front end should oscillate 3 and ½ times. It will move from full left to right back to left and then to right and then back to left stopping somewhere near the center. If the head is either too tight (over damped) or too loose (under damped) the head nut needs adjustment
