Default Shovelhead knocking

Spring is here so i decided to start up my bike and get it ready for spring. The last time i rode it in the fall it ran fine, but the other day i pulled the choke kicked it and got it started. I ran it for a few minutes and when i took the choke off and let it idle i could hear a knocking. The bike is a 1977 Harley FXWG with a 93 cu in S&S stroker shovelhead. Any help would be great. Thanks!

I would recommend a compression test.

Depends on how loud or where the "knocking" is.

Could be a (comparativly minor) stuck lifter...or something really MAJOR like a main bearing.

Good luck. Let us know what it is.

How was the oil pressure? Does yours have a tappet screen? If it does you might try cleaning the screen, changing the oil and filter (try to get all of the sludge out), cross your fingers and start it once more....

The oil pressure is fine, and the knocking sounds like its coming staright through the air cleaner from the carb. The bike runs fine, no sputtering or anything... but the knocking is kinda sketchy

Wrong answers... the sound isn't coming deep from the bowels of the engine... hmmmm.... Is it deep thunk, thunk, thunk or is it more of a rapid click, click, click, click? If you have a short piece of hose (garden, aquarium, etc.) try placing one end to your ear and the other to the engine. Check the area of the lifters, valve covers, intake runners into the cylinders, etc. and see if you can determine where it is coming from...

Sounds like a lifter, coming from that area. Mebbe one of 'em didn't pump up enough.

Try this old mech trick take a long screwdrive or steel rod, start the bike take one end of the rod or screwdriver handle and place it tight to youre ear place the other end and place it on diffrent part's of the motor such as the head's, jug's, lifter blocks and the crank case. The closer you get to the knocking sound the louder it will get. This should put you right in the area of were the noise is comming from, the rod will act as an amplifier and transmit the sound to youre ear much better then the air does.
