I changed the primary cover on my 94 sportster and now the oil drain nut just spins when i try to screw it in. Does this mean the inside housing of the nut is stripped? if so what can i do? The nuts screws in normally just as it gets to the end of the thread it just continues to turn. help
1. it might be stripped OR
2. The cover you put on takes a different size drain plug.
Try wrapping the threads on the plug with teflon tape and don't screw it in all the way and see if it holds. Does the plug have a head on it? Or is it just a threaded plug?
the plug is not on the primary itself. It is on the very bottom of bike just behind primary on the engine case itself. it is the same oil plug screw that i took out. the plug has a head on it. will try the wrap tonight and let you know. If it is stripped do i have to take it to the shop or is there something i can do if the tape does not work . one more question do i need to screw it all the way in when i put the tape on? sorry for all the questions new to this repair thing....
man I would make certain that thing is in and tight! it would suck if you were goin down the road and it vibrated loose dumping all your oil on the back tire!
did the plug come out easy enough ?
if you rtied to force it back in you may have boogered up the threads on the hole (seeing as how the plug is harder than the aluminum case) . If so try to re-tap the hole but be GENTLE dont force it .... youdont want to cut a new set of threads, just repair the originals.
Note: back the tap completely out and clean it of any shavings multiple times during this process to prevent any from getting in the bottom end.
you might try parts store, they carry a replacement bolt for buggered oil pans blots for cages.. looks like a rubber plug with bolt that will swell up to twice it's size when you screw the bolt in
Yeah you have a shared trans/primary on a Sporty. If it is stripped you could try re.tapping it and using a oversize drain plug or some type of drain valve like a sure drain or fumoto valve.(if you can find one that does not stick out too far) If all fails and you don't want to re-tap the case you can always jbweld an oversize plug into the stripped hole and remove used oil through the derby cover with a fluid extractor like a motive brand or pela brand. Not an ideal situation but it will work. A fluid extractor will get all the oil out if it is hot.
