I have a 2008 Nightster. I bought it new last fall, it has about 2700 miles on it. I was walking out to it today, and noticed what looked like a piece of tape hanging from the bottom of the tank. I grabbed it to pull it off and realized it was part of the paint. Looking underneath the tank the clearcoat is just bubbling and pealing off - the piece I pulled off was probably the size of 2 thumbnails and pretty thick. around the spot that pulled off, it is turing kinda white and bubbling.
Is this an issue anyone else has seen, is it likely covered under warrantly. I would like to heard some feedback before I head to the dealer. Clearly there was a manufacturing defect here as this is the wierdest thing I have seen paint do.
Any thoughts or experiences would be great. Oh, and it is the gloss orange and black...not the denim...
What you have is a case where there is a lack of adhesion between the colour and the clear. It could have been cause from moisture on the surface or clearcoat was applied too long after base coat. It could also be some other contamination on the paint prior to clear coat. Chemical knit never happened (has a time limit for this to work) and the surface was too smooth to provide mechanical adhesion that you would get by sanding it prior to clear.
Can't see there will be a problem with warranty as it's definately a painting defect. Seen many cars years ago almost shed the clear completely off the hoods and roofs until they got the system down.

harley is quite proud of their paint, therefore they want top notch satisfaction. i'm sure they'll replace the tank for you. they did when in 96 i had a small bit of paint come off from around the fuel cap on a new low rider. they replaced it and there was no problem with the warranty either.
