Start by unplugging the wiring connector and removing old bars. Then remove the wiring from 1 side of the connector at a time ( be sure to make a drawing for each color wire placement ) Then stagger your cuts where your going to make your splices, solder your connection, check for continuity, if OK heat shrink connection and on to the next wire. Once done run the wiring through the bars, install the wires back into connector, check to make sure all switches are operating properly, install the switch housing. Start on next side and follow above. Main thing is take your time and double check all connections and make sure all switches are operating properly. When fishing wires through bars use some WD40 to help make it easier for pulling wires through. Good Luck.

Just had this discussion with a friend yesterday.

Since your all up there in the switches...
Remove Seat
REmove Fuel Pump Fuse (EFI)
Run gas out of line,
Disconnect battery.
Move tank back.
Unplug wires.
Dissconnect clutch
Remove cables from housings
REmove the handlebars to the bench- controls and all.

Now choose which order to work on:
throttle cables at throttle body
clutch cable
wiring/ bar swap
Do front brake last.

Just take 10 minutes and make a lit step by step. It'll help you keep focused if you get overwhelmed- there are a lot of little tasks to do, none of them difficult, but there are a lot of them....

as stated -

you'll need to modify:
throttle cables
clutch cable
brake line
switch wiring

not a small task

You're probably already riding with your new apes by now. But if someone's looking for advice, it's a good idea to take some digital photos of parts, plugs, wire locations, etc as you take things apart (good advice for any project). That way, if it doesn't go back together quite right, you have a reference to look at.

...and if you happen to forget to stagger the wire cuts and soldering areas as mentioned above, you'll begin to see something that resembles a snake that just ate a mouse after you put the heat shrink and wiring wrap back on. Don't ask me how I know...

Fair question: Riding comfort. Read all the threads on apes and you will see raves about how comfortable they are. But apes aren't for everyone.

nothing against personial taste but seems like every newbie around throws apes on. Just cant get use to seeing baggers with apes. kinda like a midget wearing 12inch heels dont look right, as far as comfort i rode a buddies bike with apes for 400 miles, hands kept going numb, and at low speed turning tight sucked, not to mention around here the cops screw with you
