Engine upgrade
I have talked to a couple dealers and one says to install the big bore kit, another says just install a cam, I want more pulling and passing power. Can't tell them I pull a trailer....so what are some suggestions I could do? I already pulled my Timeout trailer to Sturgis and back flawless but think I could us a a bit more ummph...know what I mean? Rather have more power than not enough? Any suggestions would be considered.....thanks in advance

Hi Raza,
You might find it a bit lonely here! Most posts about tuning engines get put in the forum relating to the range of bike being tuned. So if you look into Touring, for example, you will find lots on improving performance for loaded bikes. I suggest you take a stroll over there, but get yourself a long drink first! Personally I fitted an S&S 107 as my solution for more pulling power.

I'm lookin at doin the same with my 07 Ultra and had the same ?'s, like to hear what you find. I was originally told that a cam change would do everything to make the difference in low end for trailer pulling, but then later told the the Big Bore kit includes the cams and may not be a lot of difference in price and get more extras. Still researching. Also, not sure if the kit has the same cams that would be used separately otherwise.
My '99 flhtc has the big bore kit with the SE 203 cams and a power commander and the emphasis is on low end torque. My heads are stock which I think contributes to the torque accent. The added inches really give it the grunt so I don't think just adding cams will do it for you. You don't mention whether you are carb or FI but after the mods I would definitely invest in a good dyno tune and tell the guy you want low end torque for towing that trailer. Too big a cam will kill the low end with a heavy load.
Just my 2 cents.

Doing a combination of things may work well for trailer pulling. On the 07 and later 96" you can gear it down by using one of the kits like the EVO 30 tooth or the Andrews tranny sprocket. EVO makes the one that changes out the compensator for both the FLH's and the Softail/Dynas. That and cams would give you some umph. Then you could do the whole shabang. Lots of variables to consider.
