Default help w/ my kicker! Please!

Hi, noob here, new to Harley's, but had jap bikes for twenty odd years. Recently acquired a '65 xlch, in basket form. Put her back together, as I am very familiar with mechanicals, having been a mechanic for the last twenty five years or so. Put her together with the help of an all but useless Clymer that came with the bike, and have been able to fire it up, but reluctantly. She is very hard to start, and now I have an inkling of what you guys are talking about when you say Sportster's knee!
Kicker has been slipping more and more, and now pretty much won't catch at all. Got a used assembly on order, not sure if it will make that much difference, but gonna plug away at it.
My question is on base timing. I have gapped plugs, and points (at .018), and have a fat blue spark on plugs. Set my timing mark in the window, and short cam is just about to contact points. ( on compression stroke )
I guess what I want to know, is do I have it all correct so far, and why is it so hard to start? Or is that the nature of the beast, and love it, or leave it is the only answer? What else can I do to ensure easier starts, and more smiles per mile?
Thanks for the great reads, and info! Any and all knowledge from you old-timers is greatly appreciated!

hey ledsledz---im sure there are some knowledgeable people here in the general tech section...i hope so cause i need paint info but i bet youre question will be bettered answered in the ironhead section...where i usually am.----it seems to me everything you said is right on.my memory is not all that great but everything you said seems correct.it should be easier to start though.i would wait and see what happens when you get youre kicker corrected might just be spinning yuoure wheels til then....there some guys over there with early bikes that can tell you every aspect of one it seems.hope this helps a little.

Thanks Straydog13. Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out the navigation on these pages, but am going to try to fix the kicker later on this week and see where it goes from there.
