I wasn't sure where to post this so here goes.
I am going to start tearing down my old 84 FXR for a slight customization and rebuild what needs it.Right now I have a 6' Craftsman workbench that seems way too small and need some new stuff.I looked around for a decent bench, but cant really tell how good they are over the internet.Need something sturdy enough to work on an engine and other stuff. If I cant find anything I will build it myself and get a plate of steel from the job for the top.
Im also looking for a compressor,120v with enough capacity to run hand tools like impact wrench's and such.Ive been told to ditch the Craftsman name for this item as they dont hold up and are tough to gets parts for when they break.I dont really think I need a welder right now so Ill save the money.
Any ideas will be appreciated.Thanks
Check out Grainger and McMaster-Carr, both have online catalogs. They won`t be cheap but their stuff is industrial quality.
I have an old bench that was going to the scrap pile, one of the Grainger benches, with a laminated work surface. I used it last time I rebuilt my Evo motor. Plenty strong.
The laminate surface is good because it is easy to clean, and is easy on the parts.
I think you can even buy just the bases for their benches if you want to make your own top.
Get a 2 stage compressor with about a 60 gal tank. Build the frame for your workbench out of wood. 4 x 4's for the legs, 2 x 4's for the frame, 3/8" or 1/2" plywood for the top if your going to cover it in metal. If not, 3/4" plywood for the top and the backsplash. This way you can customize it for the space you have for it, and it will be plenty strong for your motor. Get some cheap small tool racks to hang over the bench for your quick grab tools. An acetylene torch is nice to have too.

If you have northern tool or similar store in your area you may want to check them for the compressor. You may aslo want to check the 220V because the price may not be much different. I have a 60GL 220V belt driven compressor I got for just under 400. Store brand but usually all made by the same people. It's not portable but I have piped in several outputs thru the shop.
Check around for local businesses closing down that may have good shop tables and tools for sale.
I used to have an 8 foot bench, but it just got to be a catch-all. Scaled back to a 4 footer. I made and like a 3 x 4 roll around workstation. Allows me to work on all sides of something without the constant re-positioning of stuff. Plus it can be pushed into the corner while I use the main bench for other stuff.
If your on a budget like I am, I constructed a nice work bench using 4 X4 legs, 2 X4 framing around the edges. The top was constructed using an old solid core entry door. Entire job was less than $50.
