Yeah, I know I'll have to rejet the carb but I wanna know if it voids the warranty. I haven't decided if I'm putting on new pipes or what; just lookin' at all my options.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 - 15 USC 2301 - is the federal legislation related to warranties. In a nutshell, it says that if you change or modify a component, and thereafter have a warranty claim, it is up to the MANUFACTURER to prove that what you did caused the warranty problem. We usually hear that doing something will "void the warranty". Not necessarily true. The entire warranty can't be voided by the action - only parts of the warranty directly affected by the change.
Downside, however, is the manufacturer can play hardball and you might have to go to court to win your case - is it worth it? Only you can say. I did win a case in the early 90s against Yamaha when they wouldn't honor a speedometer repair because I had changed the exhaust. Small claims judge was pretty well versed in Magnuson Moss and told them to pony up!
No, the laptop you have just isn't worth enough for them to let you swap it.
If you want the newer updated version you have to pay for it (and computers depreciate so quickly there's not much point even asking about a trade in).
