Default Ooops...

Made a big oops today! Not officialy having removed my head from my a** yet, I dumped Dot 3 fluid in my resovoir! So I dissasembled the whole system and drained it. You think this is good enough or does it need flushed when I drop in the 5?

You will need to flush it out. Check this link and read about the coagulation when DOT 3 or DOT 4 is introduced into DOT 5:

Thanks John, some good info in there.

I'm still wondering about the implications of continuing to use Dot 3 in this sytem.
The main advantages I see in Dot 5 are it's boiling point and it's non corrosiveness.

Since the system is brand new it has never had any other fluid in it, so coagulation wouldn't be an issue.
The next question is whether or not the components may have a negative reaction to the glycol versus the silicone.

Why would you want to use DOT 3? Stick with the DOT 5, as you read the article the reason HD uses it, is not so much for the boiling point as much as, if spilled on paint, no damage. The DOT 3 will damage the components as stated in the article.

Just flush it out with DOT 5 and put the 5 back in and you will be o-k. If you still use the 3 you will be faced with major damage and repairs to your brake system over a period of time. Coagulation will be a factor even if you drain all the 5 out, you will never get it all out. No brainer in my book. Best of both worlds with the DOT 5

Johnny,

This is true, but since Omen's HD came with the DOT 5, this is what you have to use to replenish or replace. DOT 3/4 is not compatible with DOT 5.

I guess I wasn't clear enough.
When I stated that "the system was brand new" I meant just that, the handle bar controls are new, not that the whole bike is new.
The new brake system has only had Dot 3 in it. Personaly I feel it's worth avoiding any and all coagulation issues by simply continuing to use the Dot 3 unless the glycol will damage the components. None of the Q&A's on that page state anything at all about damage to the components. There is a reference to replacing any rubber parts as to eliminate any trapped residue which in turn would coagulate. So unless the system would be damaged in some way I can't see playing hit or mis. I'll hit up the manufacturer with the issue and get some concrete answers.

Omen,

For sure, I was confused, but hey that's not hard to do at my age. By all means if you have'nt ever had DOT 5 in it, continue on with the the DOT 3 and you should'nt have any problems. Just don't spill any on the paint.

lol, I often have the same problem John. I do thank you for your input though. And like you say I'll just continue to use the Dot 3 and avoid the hassles.
