Excellent advice from all. If you start out on a $1000 Honda that's a few years old, You can drop it a time or two then resell it for about $1000. Good luck and enjoy.

Howdy Troy, welcome to the forum. You have been given a lot of good advice from people that have been there. You have a lot of questions to ask and that's understandable. If you are uncertain about what you want to do, no problem, just do as you have been advised and you should be all right. Let us know how you are getting along with your quest, Thanks.

The only thing I might suggested is that if you are considering a bike with forward controls in the future, you might want to buy a used 'drop me' bike with forward controls as well. (i.e. don't go buy a crotch rocket and expect it to handle the same as a HD due to the riding positions....

I'm not really sure what you mean by forward controls?

I'm not really sure what you mean by forward controls?

Imagine yourself going down the highway on a motorcycle. Your shifter is pretty much straight down from your tank on the frame. Towards the front of the bike, you might have some highway pegs that you might choose to put your feet on to stretch out your legs when riding long distances. Imagine, besides having the front pegs, you also had the shifter and clutch pedal located above the forward pegs, that would be what is called forward controls. I hope that this answers your question. If not feel free to ask again.

Typically most european bikes will have the foot pegs and controls directly under the rider so that you are sittting in more of an upright position. This is most common in dirt bikes or dual purpose bikes for agility. Crotch rockets alot of times actually put the foot pegs and controls a little back of the upright position so that you will be leaning forward.
Forward controls or cruiser controls are when the foot pegs and controls are out towards the front of the motor and allow for a more comfortable 'cruising' position. It has been described as the recliner positon (cruiser) as opposed to the school desk position (european, etc.)....
Clear as mud?

thanks guys! I really appreciate all the advice. I'll be sheduling the MSF course for mid July, and go from there. I've been looking at the Sportster 1200 Custom, I'll let you guys know what happens.

Best!

Troy

well i also picked up a 1200 custom as my first bike. im 5-11 and 205lbs. this bike although it is my first i believe it fits me perfect. its great for every occasion, putting around town or long hauls. i think if you go this rout you will be pleased. and if you decide youre growing out of it, then you have not lost that mutch. i would recomend going used for you first bike though

Good advice above, particularly the MSF course. I'm with Tripper, go buy a $500 Honda or any other Jap bike, and ride it. You'll quickly learn what you like, don't like, want, and don't want. Drop it, play with it, learn it. Then sell it for $500, and get the bike you want. You're riding preferences will change pretty drastically over the first year. In the mean time, do what you're doing, ask questions, and READ. There is a lot of information on this forum, many questions have been asked. Pretty soon you'll know all you need to know.

Good luck, you're about to enter a whole new world of HAPPY!
