HEY GUYS, GOT A PROBLEM WITH MY 1983 XLS ROADSTER. THERE IS NO VIN DECAL ON THE FRAME! I CAN'T SEE ANY NUMBERS STAMPED IN EITHER. EXAMINED STEERING HEAD VERY CAREFULLY - NOTHING! NOT EVEN SURE IF THE NUMBERS WOULD HAVE BEEN STAMPED IN OR JUST ON A DECAL. IF STAMPED, HE MUST HAVE USED BODY FILLER AND PAINTED OVER IT. I WANT TO SAND IT OFF AND LOOK BUT I DON'T WANT TO RUIN PAINT IF THERE IS NO STAMPING. CAN I GET A NEW DECAL SOMEHOW? ARE THE NUMBERS STAMPED IN?
Harley stamps the serial number into the engine cases along with the frame. You should have a stamped VIN tag on the left side of the frame neck. Your serial number from the engine can also be brought to the dealer and they should be able to help you look up the VIN. Yout title should have the VIN also and in my case, my insurance card has the VIN on it too.
I have a similar issue with a 1981 FLT. I have a VIN plate on the top of the steering head, but I see no VIN stamped anywhere on the frame. Would it be common for the VIN stamped into the frame to be filled in and smoother over?
