also the air cleaner cover is the original and it seems to have a carosive look to it can this be fixed
cheers any help welcome
Generally speaking, rust comes from the surface below the copper, nickel and chrome plating. Many times cleaning the rust off will only leave the exposed steal below to quickly rust again. Your best to replate now before the parts become more pitted. Or just replace with cheaper parts already chrome plated. www.chromethathog.com
yea thats what i thought and that shop sounds like an excelent idea, problem is i live in australia if i can find one in south australia would be good, and is this a comon problem with harleys because my dad won his and i was wondering weather it was sort of a reject. but it rides excelent and the paint is an excelent finish its just the surface rust, even a temp fix might have to do because i dont want to see it leave the shed with rust on it.

I had some light surface rust on some wheels that I cleaned off with polish, then waxed. I was sure it was only a temporary fix, but it hasn't come back yet and it's been 2 years.
Old trick from restoring cars. Use a bucket of water and aluminum cooking foil. dip the foil in water and rub gently across the area. finish up with chrome polish or "Never Dull" and apply good carnuba paste wax.
