Default Sporster Crank Covers

I would like to remove the crank covers to polish them. I've been told not to try to take the primary cover off because of shims on the inside but I don't know about the right hand side. My bike is a 1993 1200 sporster and there are 11 cap screws showing. If I remove them will the cover come off? Is there anything I need to be aware of when removing

I've had my primary cover off numerous times. There are no shims. If you're going to take the covers off to polish them be sure to follow the torque specs and sequence in the service manual when you assemble it. Otherwise you may end up with leaks or stripped threads.

Thanks for your help. I think I'll go back to the primary side and have a think about the cam side. Do you know, if I take the cam cover off will I need to reset the cams or timing?

The shims are under the cam cover.
