Default Paint purchase question

I have a scratch on the front of my fairing. A guy that I know, paints in his spare time. He said he would repair the scratch if I purchase the paint. The scratch is about 5 inches long and I know it wont take that much paint butI don't know whatI need or where to get it. Is my only option going thru the dealer to get the "Impact Blue" paint?

PPG make HD paint and most PPG dealers (full service auto parts stores, not schucks or autozone types) have a harley color chart for the various years. Depending on the color you may need a base color, a pearl top color and a clear coat. Be prepared to pay dearly for this. I bought a pint of each: 2000 pearl white base and top coat three years ago and it cost over $60. My painter through in the clear coat as he had lots of it on hand.

I figured it was gonna be expensive I just didn't know if I needed a base coat/pearl or what. I think I can get away with only a pint he is going to repaint from the Road Glide stripe up to the top of the fairing. If I choose to paint the inner fairing is a pint going to stretch that far?

Yes, a pint should be enough, what brand of paint are you going to buy, PPG, DuPont, BASF, etc ?
PPG is pretty good stuff, I've been using it for over 20 years...

I found some PPG codes, it is not an all inclusive list though;

Well I think I am going with PPG because they have a local store that handles PPG. Since I used to work for BASF I'll try to never give another dollar to those greedy bas*ards!!

Any wayI see that you have some 2006 codes, got any for 2004 "Impact Blue."

Depending on the formula, some colors can be mixed by the ounce. Your local PPG jobber can tell you the smallest amount he can mix and still get a good color match. A pint of basecoat is enough to paint the whole bike. Ask what the smallest amount he can mix is. 1/2 or 1/4 pint may be possible

Beyond is correct, I can mix as little as 1/10 pint on my scale for some colors, most jobbers will not mix any smaller than 1 pint for walk-ins because it's not as profitable. I'll check on a code for impact blue.... get back to ya soon....

you probably have already completed your paint repair on this but my .02 worth. Make sure the painter is a bike painter not just a auto painter. I have a good friend that is a full time auto body painter. I asked him about painting my bike and he said flat out no. He is very particular on the quality he sends out from his shop and said he knew he could not get the same quality as i wanted and make it match the rest of the bike. I even shopped around to several other full time bike painters before i found one that i liked/trusted.

When you get ready to customize the inner fairing, make sure you get the additive to mix in. Same stuff used for automotive bumpers. The wear pattern on the inside needs the flex additive to keep from flaking off. The outside of your fairing is smooth, the inside is not.
