Default leaking oil

came out after work and found puddle of oil under bike. looked like leaking from primary so rode home and drained all oils. tranny was low couple of ounces, primary however had 58 ounces. engine only had 68 ounces, so my question is there any way the engine could leak oil into the primary and the overfill situation cause the leaking.

It can leak in there thru crank seal. That sleeve you see is behind the compensator stack up of parts. See groove where mine runs on seal. Be sure your transmission vent tube is open. Primary vents thru there thru the clutch push rod hole. Be sure you do level..not amount in the primary when you put things right. Thinking your primary should be less then 32 oz. If that came from engine, seal is totally gone. If so I bet your alternator rotor has shucked off serrations and is driving with only compensator spring pressure. The chips took out seal. What did your primary plug magnet look like.

I asked because older bikes, Shovelheads, shared engine, primary oil. But I don't see how oil could leak from the engine to the primary on newer bikes. except now I fully read the post above.

haven't tore down primary yet. was trying to get ideas on where to start. thinking of taking inner and outer primary off and if problem isn't evident then fill the engine with oil and run it and see if i can spot the leak. it has to be pretty big to leak that much on the ground that day.

If it were me, I would refill all three holes to correct level. Clean off the bottom side and see were the oil is coming out. Reason being a leaking seal is pretty hard to check unless it's really torn up. If your seal between engine and primary is really gone I guess you will be able to tell, but I am still puzzled where it came out. Even with the primary too full it should not leak. I would want to know that before I took primary cover off. There is a good chance you do not need to pull inner primary.
