Sportster just clicks, won't start

Hello Guys. I'm new here to the forum and I have a problem with my 93 Sportster 1200 XLH. I started it and noticed some smoke coming from under the seat. Took the seat off and noticed one of the two positive cables (normal power cable and charger cable) had some melted plastic. But it started and was idling fine. I started driving it and immediately noticed it had no power. I pulled over and shut it off and then tried restarting but it was totally dead. Got a new battery, charged it and hooked it up. The lights come on bright but there's just a single loud click when I try to start it. Any ideas?

Check to make sure
1 you still have a solid wire between the battery and the starter and the little wire has a solid connection
2 that you are not grounding out the positive cable to the frame
