One of the things I've read is that you only want to ride during daylight hours. Reasons are the wildlife and you'll miss seeing things at night.

He DID mention riding 500mi a day though and that would more then likely have to include night riding. Personally I don't care if he rides in the dark or not. He was asking for advice and so I gave him mine.

My advice is to spend some time planning the trip. Get a rough idea of where you might stay each night. Pack the saddlebags and hit the road. Great thing about riding without a large group you can change the plans at will. Buy roadside insurance just in case. Be prepared for a great time.

If anyone decides to ride Route66 don't try to be a hard nosed rider and do 500 miles a day. 250 to 350 miles is even too much. When you ride this road you've got to take your time and enjoy the ride and the sites or you defeat the whole purpose of the trip. There's too much to see and do once you get into it. Take it from someone who's done it. Make time to see the sites and you'll enjoy it a lot more.

Finally was able to come up with this...

Way to expensive! I couldn't see it being more than $1500 tops! And that's way over estimating. Checkout the PDF on the right for more information on what they do.. It looks like they do roughly 250-350 miles a day. I'm more of the 500mi a day type of guy.

I ran across this group ride today. I don't know if it's any cheaper then the Harley group ride or not.

They have a two week ride all the way to the west coast or they have what they call a working mans ride that is only a week long and that ends in Oklahoma. You ride with the two week group just end your ride there. Then the rest of the group continues on.

Man that would be cool. I don't think I could bear a trip out that far without taking another spin up US1 though, at least as far as Frisco. I think Frisco you can pick up I80 and head back to the Heartland.
I'd try doing some compromise, time off work being what it is, and try for 500 mile days. BUT that might be hard since you're not talking superslab, so 300-400 is probably more realistic. Trip back would burn your ***, probably have to roll 700 milers or more and get back in a couple days, in which case you'd need about 10 days to do it, minimum, and enjoy it at all. I've been in the same spot. For the sake of "just doing it" you need to rush a bit in spots. For me, on this California trip, I needed to do it in less than 2 weeks, but I'm glad I did it, even though I would have rather taken ore time. Don't take the easy way out and never do it "because you didn't have time to do it right". You will NOT regret it.

ps 3 to 6 WEEKS? I could push a bike through that trip in that length!
