Smile Wisconsin Riders

Plan on going to Wisconsin in May or June next year for 2 weeks of riding. Plan on staying in the northern half of state one week and southern part one week. Would appreciate any info on good roads to ride, restaurants, sites to visit, and a good general location for base camp in travel trailer (RV Park). Also which would be the better month to visit. Thanks.

Kettle Moraine area is awesome riding, lots of biker friendly places to stop. In the town of Dundee on a good Saturday it's almost like being at a bike rally because so many bikes and classic cars ride thorugh the kettles on a good weekend. Lots of scenic roads with hills and curves, beautiful scenery and wildlife.

JUS' remember, Sconi IS a "headgear" state. ARE YOU REEEELLEEE, reeellee chur you wanna do this, Son????

And DON'T FERGET, they ARE the Dairy state, so they have cows there!!!!

JUS' thought you oughta know, B 4 you fill the tank, and head out!!!!

BUT if you wait til August, the snow will be gone, and the grass will have begun to green up a bit, BY THEN !!!!! HaHa, Ya missed, Smoky !!!

OH, and IF you are STILL going, do not fergit your "beer drinkin' " goggles!!!!

BTW, the State of Mn does have a "RESCUE HOTLINE" for stranded tour-eye, 1-800-WISC SUX !!!!! Bwahahaha HOWDEE, Nayburrz

We, AT LEEST, have .

ALL B.S. aside: you would be hard pressed to find a BAD place to ride over there. They do watch YOUR SPEED closely, at least that's my experience over the years. BUT if you can't find GREAT areas to ride, you ARE NOT in Sconi, anymo' Dorothy.
Hayward/Radisson area, was noted for Gangsters. Still some touristy places there, to see. Al Capone, etc. Lake Superior, Bayfield, Ironwood in the North. Lake Mich. to the east side. The ferry from Ludington, Mi to Manitowoc (sp), Wi is a GREAT trip. Breweries and MoCo in Milwaukee. Angle across, Wi$con$in Dell$ is a TOURIST TRAP, but beautiful area. Southwest area, LaCrosse, the river bluffs, is a GREAT ride.

But STAY on the east side of the 'moat', OKAY???? We don't cotten to folx draggin' Sconi dirt over this way !!!!

The roads in Wisconsin are awesome. Advise take the ones that are named with the Alphabets. If you are a member of the National HOG, look in your atlas for some of the roads that they have marked. We just got back from riding through the Kickapoo Valley roads. Trees are just starting to turn. Lots of gentle twisties and jump and down roads.

June, July or August are all pretty good months here, with June usually having the most rain. Lately, September has been the best month for riding...for at least 3 or 4 years now. A good base camp would be the Dells. Lots to do there and can get to any other part of the state within a few hours. Don't pass up the chance to cruise Hwy 35 along the Mississippi River, Hwy 13 along the shore of Lake Superior, or any of the roads in the southern Kettle Moraine forests and along Lake Michigan.

+1 on waiting til June especially if you are serious about camping. I would start in the south and then go north. This is a tall state north to south and there can be a bit of a temperature difference in late spring. As for campgrounds, make sure you check out the State Park campgrounds. You can get a really nice guide from the WI DNR. We have camped in many of them and they are all really nice. Many have showers and other nice amenities without packing everyone in like sardines. Also, you can make reservations online at a number of the campgrounds and even select your site. One of our favorites is Lake Kegonsa State Park near Stoughton. There is a really nice lake with a beach, but the water will still be a bit cool in June. You will just 5 minutes from Stoughton which is a nice little town. Nice thing about this particular park is that it is just 20 minutes from Madison and just over an hour from Milwaukee. Plus, there are at least three really great "back roads" you can take to get to Milwaukee from there, plus I-94 if you are in a hurry. All the campsites are in the woods so make sure you bring your DEET. If I was to choose one location to work out of for four or five days, this would be it. You can cover pretty much all of SE WI within an hour and a half radius.

Madison is a fun town and there is a huge farmer's market every Saturday on the Capitol Square. And State street is a loaded with all kinds of restaurants and some fun bars. Make sure you grab a beer and set out on the patio behind the Student Union and enjoy the view of Lake Mendota.

Only thing is that Madison is not a rider's paradise. The streets are really a maze because of the two big lakes that dominate the terrain. That said, the locals are friendly and willing to help if you get lost.

Funny thing is - I live here and even as I type this I am getting envious of your trip.
