Looking for ideas. I am going to be taking a road trip in August before I start a new job. I'm not going to take my cycle this time. Probably going to scout out some routes for when I do take the cycle.
I am going to take the SS Badger from Manitowac over to Ludington and then head up to Mackinaw then take some sort of route back to Wisconsin. Anyone have any pointers or suggestions for a route to take. I am big into photography so I am looking for some scenery or "must see" things.
When in Indiana, take HWY 12 as much as possible. It will run you by the national lakeshore. On the far west side you will see old steel mills like US Steel, LTV and what-not. Not much to look at but it is history. When you get past all that stuff then you will see some very nice scenery. Be sure to stop and Mount Baldy (big *** sand dune) that leads to a nice beach you reach on foot. That is something. Then a bit further east is the Michigan City Lighthouse at what I believe is Washington Beach. It is all nice riding.
ah, btw there is also the HUGE Four Winds Casino once you get into Michigan (New Buffalo). Even if you are not a gambler, it is a site to behold and has a hell of a buffet spread. The access road leading back to it alone is breath-taking. http://www.newbuffalo.com/casino/

Thanks for any suggestions...
From Ludington take US31 up to Manistee then jump on M22 (one of my favorite rides) and follow to Northport and then back to Traverse City and US31. Continue on 31 to just north of Petosky and then get on M119 up through Harbor Springs and then the "Tunnel of Trees". After the bridge you pretty much hace 2 choices heading west, US2 or M28... both have their good points. If you have the time, the ride through Houghton and on to Copper Harbor is great. Once in Copper Harbor make sure to check out Brockway Mountain.... you could probably fill a few memory cards between the overlooks, waterfalls, and shoreline shots. Pictured Rocks in Munising is also excellent. http://www.nps.gov/piro/index.htm

and you can't forget Tahquamenon Falls
Wow, thanks for this one. Definitely going to keep this one in the records for the trip. I really would like to get to Houghton, my parents lived up for a few years there and I have never been there.
