Default Trailer Security

I've been toying with the idea of getting a trailer. I like to camp and a trailer would certainly allow me to take more "stuff" to make my experience more enjoyable. My concern is theft. When you guys arrive at a campsite, hotel, rally, etc how do you secure your trailer? For instance, if I'm camping out in an open field at the "Buffalo Chip", what's to prevent anyone from stealing it when I'm out riding the badlands?

I have a trailer and when I'm at a hotel I will use a couple security cables and tie it to light pole. Not sure how you would security at Sturgis, unless there was something like a pole to tie it to. Grumpy

The only way to secure it would be to chain/cable it to something, but those could be cut.
And just like a bike,a few people could lift it up to put in a trailer or truck and drive away.

Insurance on the trailer may help your worries.

About all you can do is run a cable thru wheels and frame of trailer. That is if there is nothing to chain it to.. If they want it bad enough they will get it no matter what you do..I have never had anyone mess with mine, but never been to hugh event like Sturgis before.

There are locks out there you can get that somehow cover the ball hitch on the trailer so no one can hook a ball in there and skate with your trailer. Don't remember how they work but I do remember seeing them at a trailer supply store a few years back. That way, if there is no tree or pole to cable to, your hitch is locked up instead.

I use a ball lock, a lock for the hasp over the ball and I tie a heavy cable through the wheel and around the axle. If they want it that bad then they can have it.

A good insurance policy is the best security that you can get. If a thief wants it very badly, he will have it in under 1 minute. Especially in this age of battery powered die grinders, winches and flatbed trucks.
