Default Thundermax-- WOW!

I was going to wait until I got my pipes which are coming next week. I couldn't wait plus I wanted to see what effect the true duals would have on the set up everything else being equal. I installed the Tmax which went very smoothly except for the fact of the top bolt of the factory ECM had a lot of loctite on it. I ended up drilling it out from the back and replacing the insert with one designed for wood which I found at OSH. I also installed a Tmax A/C 2.75" deep K&N style. Not too pretty, cast aluminum base, $95. Not sure how it compares to Big Sucker, size wise and finish wise. Went for a road test after I did all the intialization...WAY more grunt down low..VERY impressed. Seems to pull all the way through. Everything works, speedo exact ( compared w/ GPS) No pops ( still stock exaust though...) The ONLY concern I have at this point is what effect the true duals will have on power. I suppose in theory with the Tmax, it should adjust by adding more fuel to compensate for any lean condition caused by the reduced backpressure due to lack of the factory crossover. If it's ANYWHERE near where it is now, I'll be ecstatic. So far, so FANTASTIC.

Just thought I'd give you the update...

One question, once it is installed and up and running when you turn the ingnition on do you wait for the check engine light to go off before starting like the stock ecm??

No wait...but I didn't wait with stock ECM either. When it says in the HD manual, the check engine lite comes on for four seconds and the fuel pump purrs for two seconds, I think its more for the sake of informing the bike owner. It's so you don't go to the dealer and say, "Hey, what's that check engine coming on for when I start it?". "And what's that purring noise?" I never waited. I suppose if the bike hadn't been started in a long time, it might crank longer than usual before starting until fuel pressure built up. Most cars do the same thing, but you don't wait to start those right?

Bottom line... It rocks!

Thanks for the report Mr5150,
I too ordered mine last Friday. Did you order your's direct from Zipper's? And if so, did they pre-map the ECM to your spec's before they shipped it? If not, how was installing the mapping yourself? I've been looking thru the tuning manual on thier website and although I can wrench with the best of them, my computer skills have me a little worried as far as programing this thing once i have it all installed. Any advice or suggestions would be apprecaited, thx, Putt

I did get it from Zipper's before I knew Zanotti's had it $130 cheaper. It was preloaded (as marked on the CD sleeve)but changing maps is very easy once you get a feel for the software. I downloaded it and read manual before the module arrived. The main thing that confuses people is figuring out the right map. At first glance the software makes it seem like you can make your own map just by entering eng type, t/body type, exhaust type etc... when actually you have to pic from a more limited list of base maps. These will get you close and auto tune does the rest. If you go step by step you shouldn't any probs...if you do, there are several here, in addtion to Zipper tech support, that would be happy to help. Good luck
