Exploding Stators?
A friend of mine brought something to my attention the other day and now I am currious. According to him, there is an ongoing issue with the stators from 08, 09, 10 on all touring models. From what he tells me, the issue starts when the outer shroud on the stator develops cracks which eventually leads to metal parts flying off. from there, it doesn't end well...
To back up his claim, he even brought me a sample. Until recently, I had 2 09 models, one an FLHX and the other an FXDC. I traded the FLHX for a new bike but still have the FXDC. It has 25,000kms (15,600miles) with no issues (so far).
So my question is, is there really an ongoing issue with the stators "self grenading" and if so, does it also apply to the FXDC?
Thanks in advance!
The rotor sits over top of the stator.
Since there is no visible damage to the rotor, I don't think it indicates in any way the stator exploded.
The damaged portion in the picture is actually a spring pack ( minus its guts ) which is a part of the Compensator. That integrated rotor/spring pack was used on the 07-10 touring bikes ( I don't know about other models )
Do a search for bad Compensator.
Question: why did you post this in the Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel Injection section?
I had a feeling that something was "amiss" (in what I was told) and that what I was looking at wasn't actually the "stator". I was actually thinking this was more of a "compensator" issue than stator but went along with his description anyways as I am "no expert". That and he just would "shut up" about it.
As for why I posted here, I was thinking along the lines of "ignition", Electrical... Stator? My bad, I apologize.
Your answer will help greatly in that I now have something tangible to go on.
Thank you.
