Default Preserving battery

Just bought 2006 xlch after not riding for 25 years. I see that the machine is totally disabled if the battery goes dead. That's going to happen fast if the alternator fails. This will bring down the bike very rapidly due to all the lights running. I'll be taking this machine across Mexico deserts a great deal and am not at all enthusiastic at being hostage to a single element on the bike. I think it would be very foolish to trust the system to that degree. Anybody given this any thought? Any kits out there to install a divided bus so the lights are switched on instead of always on? Any better ideas?

You could control the lights by putting a small toggle switch in the ground side of the light and mounting it throught the headlight shell.

Appreciate the suggestion re a light switch. The problem would be (I think) that any drain other than from ignition would zap the battery fast, so all the lights would have to be controlled. Along the same lines as your thought I'm thinking that I'll split the bus and wire all lights except the turn and brake through a separate switched connection. If I bring along a really small and light spare battery and plan on push starting if it comes down to using it, I figure I'll have it covered. Don't ever expect to need the system, but I'll be a very long way from any service if I ever had to.
