Okay so a loaner bike I had could start in gear. And I’m pretty sure my bike wouldn’t...then it did for like a day and now it’s back to no start in gear. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting? I want it to start when I have the clutch in and it’s in gear.
There is no setting, it should start with the clutch pulled in if the switch is working correctly. If it isn't some have had luck with lubing the switch, if not you have to replace the left switch pack, or the switch individually.
Clutch switch on mine only worked at the very very end of the lever squeezed in.
I put thicker grips on mine (ISOs) and that was enough to stop the switch working. I stuck a couple of layers of metal tape on the bump of the lever that actuates the switch and got it going again.
Well I usually park in gear in case of rolling. As for safer I’m not worried about starting the bike in gear. But if it makes sense about preserving the system. Thanks for y’all help.
If we get stuck in traffic and stall, for example, starting in gear is the natural thing to do. Even my 1990 bike will do that! I do occasionally use a gear to stop rolling, but engage neutral for starting, when returning to my bike.
