Default scared to upgrade

want to go with a stage 1 upgrade to my 06 ultra but with all the horror stories i have heard with downloads etc. i might like to just put pipes on it to make it sound like a harley and not a goldwing, also heard the 06 stock pipes have a cataletic converters in them which i dont like. Thinking of putting on either seII slip ons or harley touring mufflers. My question is what effect would such pipes have on the running of the bike because of backpressure drop etc. and what else would i have to do to the bike. Also any experience with the harley touring mufflers ? How much louder than stock ? I want a little more sound than stock but not too loud.

I was a little worried myself, however, I just put Vance and Hines Big shot longs on my 06 Fatboy with the download and new air cleaner and have had no real problems. I have notices only one back fire in the several weeks that I have had it done. Seems to be working just fine.

I have had a little experience with fuel injection mapping on crotch rockets and know this. Any time you affect the flow, you probably need to adjust the fuel mapping. A 14,500 rpm redline crotch rocket is probably more sensitive than a Harley, but I would be careful. For example, on my Honda F4I, when I changed from a stock air cleaner to the K&N, my bike ran too lean. Changing from the stock exhauast to the Yosh pipes made it even leaner. Even one of those changes on a crotch rocket can burn the valves over time.

Checking the color of the plugs will tell you if you are way off, but some damage may occur while you are testing.

When I changed the air filter and exhaust, I installed the power commander and loaded a generic map from their site, then had the bike dyno tuned.

Carb bikes need to be adjusted and/or re-jetted for the same reasons.

Again, crotch rockets are probably more sensitive, but becareful.

Look at it this way. THe fuel curve was set up for a specfic amount of air flow in and out of the engine. A engine is nothing more than a air pump. So if you alter the amount of air and do not increase fuel you will get a lean condition. for example the stock air fuel ratio is 14.1 and you increase the amount by 3% of air now you have not added any fuel you ratio or air to fuel has gone up.
