Default Exhaust and remap question

Hey guys,
I posted this over on the Sporty section, but only got 1 reply and wanted a few more opinions.
A friend at work has a 2007 1200 Sporty and ordered the Vance $ Hines Short Shot pipes. I'm going to put them on for her and save her the $$$ at the dealer for install.
My question is,,,,does the bike need to be re-mapped? It IS fuel injected. What can I do to assure the pipes don't turn blue? I've heard there are tricks to this, like using neew clamps, any truth???
Also, the dealer told her she has to have a new breather kit, to the tune of $150.00 plus install,,,,any truth to that? I think he ended up telling her she had to have a Stage 1 kit done too? Her bike is bone stock.
Thanks

Many of us won't know the specifics about the engine in the Sportster, but here are a few general comments that seem to pertain to the 96 inch motor in the touring models:

To a large degree, the performance of the motor is a function of the amount of air and fuel that is delivered to the cylinders and then evacuated after ignition. The conventional wisdom is that if you only add mufflers, then you don't need to remap the ECM since the limiting factor for the air/fuel mixture is the air intake. I'm not convinced that's 100% correct due to the lean condition of the tune on the stock engines. I suspect that a free-flow exhaust will increase the amount of air moving through the system and since the fuel has remained relatively the same, the mixture will be leaner.

An aftermarket fuel manager or reprogramming of the ECM would seem like a good idea, and most of us with the touring models elect to go that route to enhance the fuel being delivered to the cylinders and generate more power. The HD ECM download runs about $150, and an aftermarket fuel manager runs $250-$500 or more if you need to put the bike on a dyno.

To achieve optimum performance enhancements, you'll want to move more air through the engine, and that means an intake that has higher flow capacity. You could just replace the stock air filter with a K&N unit, but other options exist as well.

no remap needed for slip ons only. must remap with harley se a/c. yes use new clamps, they stretch to wrap when tightened make sure you tighten clamp with the BF ratchet to bottom out clamp as designed

When I had my V&H installed with the K&N air cleaner I had to get a remap done. It will be worth it in the long run....

You will notice the engine running a little hotter without the remapping.. Been there, did that with the exact same bike. Had more success when I remapped and put a stage one breather on. I loved the pipes. When I sold the bike and purchased the 09 EG, I kept the pipes for some one that might be interested. Well there ya go.. Love em, ride em, enjoy em. Have a great day.

I would advise you to indeed have a tuning done after install of the slip-ons. I learned this the hard way on my '07 Softail after installing rinehart slip-ons in my garage. 3k miles later after finding a motor guy in Dallas he explained the lean condition Minister spoke of earlier and the damage that was being done.

The bikes are set up extremely lean from the factory due to EPA standards. Adding the slip ons only increased the A/F ratio on my bike and it wasn't until I had him add an air cleaner and PC3 did we get the ratio down to where it needs to be at cruising speed.

The blue tint to the pipes is going to happen from what I have been told. I have an '08 bagger and the pipes have turned quite a bit even after dynoing and being set up a bit richer than stock, my wifes '09 sportster has a little over 1k on it and is already turning and it is bone stock.

Just my two cents, new to the forum but thought I would share my experience. Its worth finding a guy in your area to get it right and not risk burning up the motor running it too lean.

If your in Dallas I know of a good guy and if you have any questions he'll be happy to help.

My wife has an 07 sporty with the Vance and Hines short shots, she did the SE air clearer and race tuner. I would highly recomend both as she has had and will continue to have problem free riding.

They sound great by the way.
