Default Newbies 2nd, speedo and turn signal issue

Greetings from the newbie. Just got my plate today and went for my first ride on my 2000 road king police. Bike ran great. My speedo quit working after a few miles and the turn signals would not cancel after my turns. I did a search and it looks like the vss needs to be cleaned or replaced. My question is, where is the vss? What does it look like? Also, it is almost impossible to get my bike into neutral. Are the any adjustments for this issue. Thanks in advance.

I pulled the VSS out this morning and it was covered with shavings. I cleaned it up and went for a test ride and the speedo still does not work and the turn signals will not cancel after a turn. Should I replace the vss? If so, where can I find directions on how to replace. Thanks
