Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel InjectionNeed advice on ignition issues? Questions about a tuner? Have questions about a EFI calibration or Fuel Injection? Tips on Engine Diagnostics, how to get codes, and what they mean. Find your answers here.
I’m having a hard time starting my 94 ultra glide classic. I inherited the bike which sat for a year with a cut fuel line. I replaced all the lines, cleaned the fuel filter, and re-serviced it. I finally got it to start but as I slowly push the enricher in the engine boggs down. If I leave it full out it eventually dies then is hard to start while hot. It’s at a point now where it doesn’t start at all. You can hear the starter but it won’t turn over. I’ve already checked the battery and it’s good. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.
So "You can hear the starter but it won’t turn over." Does that mean you hear a click but the engine does not turn over? Or the engine cranks but does not start? Do the lights dim when you try to crank it? And as mentioned above, was the battery load tested to ensure it has enough CCA?
If the battery was load tested and passed, then you could try jumping the solenoid at the smaller green wire on the starter solenoid to bypass everything from the solenoid back to the starter button, but you still have the battery cables to consider. But if the solenoid is bad, it will still only click and not turn the engine over. If it turns over but won't start, check that the carb is getting fuel. If the carb has an accelerator pump, you should see a stream of fuel when you twist the throttle, but you will need to lift the slide on the CV carb to see it.
Is this the original CV carb or something else, S&S Super B, E etc? After sitting for a year the float may be sticking and not allowing fuel into the bowl. You comment about opening the enrichner could mean that it is very lean and holding the choke closed helps with that, but the plugs could also be fouled. You might check those to verify they aren't fouled or wet with fuel. If they are dry and not fouled, you could squirt a small amount of gas into the carb to see if ti will crank, but be careful incase it backfires.
