Magneti Marelli Old topic
I know this topic has been discussed many times, but I can't seem to find the answers to my questions. I have a 2001 Road King Police with the MM fuel injection. It has 43,000 miles and to date it has been working fine. I need to inspect the cam and tensioner as it hasn't been done yet. Thinking of going with the S&S 509 for more low end grunt and putting a 2 into 1 pipe on it. Will it need a tune after or will the MM system handle the change? I hate the thought of having to spend $1000.00 on something like a Thundermax. At that point I may as well do the carb conversion. Also any suggestions on a good 2 into 1 exhaust for a basically stock 88".
Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, you'll need to tune it to get the most out of your changes. Do your research, there's lots of tuners out there. As for the 2 into 1 exhaust, same. There's lots out there. Personally I'm running V&H Pro Pipe on mine and am very happy with it.
If you are looking for the most power and noise the 509 with a D&D Fatcat or Bassani Roadrage will work good for power.
Regardless, a Power Commander and a proper dyno tune will be necessary to get it right.

Good news. A CV will run that bike just fine.
The downside to sticking with the MM is when and if something goes wrong (dead or bad sensor, or the ECM ***** the bed) it will be exceedingly more difficult to find someone that understands the MM system that will actually spend the time to work with the MM system.
That said I’m referring to modified engines NOT stock-cammed bikes with OEM headers. Those bikes seem easy to get right with minimal understanding.
Hoping this helps your decision making process,
Bob
disclaimer: I am a tuner

As far as I know, there are only a few guys to still have MM parts and the knowledge to keep them running. Cole is one of them.
My .02, go carb if you are going to keep the bike for any period of time then enjoy it.
