Hopefully the original poster will return after reviewing fuel tank internals and wiring to fuel pump.
1998 would have M & M fuel injection and the internals are different from Delphi fuel injection.
From a distance it is reading like the fuel pump or the wiring to fuel pump is part of the problem.
It is an older bike of unknown condition so perhaps some loose fuel tank liner totally clogging the pump and some age damaged internal tank wiring might be involved.
Found the problem it was a sort in the yellow green wire it was wedged between the tank and the frame couldn't see it started to just really trace the wire and found a hole in the wire shield taped it all up fired up runs great just like always had. just need to remember to make sure when I put the tank on make sure the wire is not in-between the tank and the frame learning lesson here

Was it the one wire that runs from front of seat then under the fuel tank console to fuel access panel?
The one with the connector rather close to seat.
