Default headlight/aux light wiring problem??

My g/f just got a sweet 04 Wide Glide with tons of stuff on it, but there's a problem. It has an Arlen Ness headlight housing and HD auxiliary lights. When the switch is on low beams, the high beam headlight is on and the aux lights are off; and when the switch is on high, the low beam headlight is on as well as the aux lights.

Is this wrong? I read a little on aux lights, and it looks like the aux lights are normally wired to be on with the low beam, and off with the high beam, but the switch wiring isn't supposed to change, is it? shouldn't low still be low, but with aux lights, and high, of course, high without aux lights?

I don't know how this stuff was wired into the bike, but where would the problem likely be? It has had the mini-apes replaced with drag bars. I don't know what's involved in this, but maybe cutting wires and resplicing is required, and they got the headlight wires wrong? Is there possibly a relay with connectors attached incorrectly?

Lastly, would the 06 wiring diagrams be the same? her 04 is an injected bike, so I thought maybe the wiring is the same, because I have diagrams for my 06.

What you are experiencing is normal.

There are several posts (the search works well) on the Touring Forum that will/can tell you how to change the wiring so that the Lights can be on the same time as the high beams.

You can also buy a $25 kit on ebay that will do the same thing

Good Luck

I saw a post about it, but it still seems that the low beam switch should still be low beam headlight, and high should be high beam headlight. Do the Aux lights get wired into the headlight, or are they wired at the relay? If they get wired at the headlight, it's simply just to open the headlight and switch the high and low beam wires. If they go to a relay, I'll have to switch them there. Since they are already installed, and I have never seem the wiring for them, I don't know where to go to make the low switch--low headlight/aux lights and high switch--high headlight/no aux.

It might be useful for you to purchase a Service Manual

All of the wiring schematics are part of the manual.

Looking at the circuits will give you a better idea of what works what

The Aux Lights are wired so that they will only get power when the head light is on low beam. When the Hi Beams are activiated, the power to the aux lights is turned off.

You can "jump" a wire in the handle bar switch housing, wire the power side of the Aux lights directly to the battery, or stay as you are.

Some of manual are easy to read but hard to do, especially in electrical wiring. My bikehead light got problem too and I try to do it on my own but the problem got worst, so I decide to call an expert mechanic.
