I talked to the mechanic today and he says that with just adding some pipes that the techillusion would be fine and cheaper to go with , well just like anyone else I would love too save money , but I want to get the best results for prolonged engine life. I keep hearing sert and pclll butIjust want the best who don't , besides this mech I'm talking about has his PHD GEARHEAD certificates and more.
Your mechanic is right. If pipes and a new air cleaner are the only mods you're going to make, a TFI (also sold by Custom Chrome as "DFO"-Digital Fuel Optimizer) will work fine for you. It's like a jet kit for fuel injection. It does NOT affect timing or any other aspects of performance. All it does is add fuel where needed along the RPM curve to keep you from running lean. It also makes no permanent changes to your bike. Should you sell or trade your bike you can unhook it in about 15 minutes and your bike's FI returns to stock.
I've had mine for over a year and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. I don't have engine heat problems, there's no popping on deceleration, and I get close to 40 mpg.
There are more complicated ways to solve the problem, but your mechanic is right when he suggests that this is a very easy and economical way to "rejet" your FI for new pipes and intake.
EDIT: Also, props to your mechanic for not suggesting a more expensive way to fix the problem that would put a lot more $$ in his pocket without necessarily doing a better job for you. He sounds like the kind of guy you want to do business with.
The techlusion unit is a good buy for the price. It doesn't address the timing or the cylinder trim but for just intake and exhaust, it's hard to beat this unit.
Dollar for dollar this unit will return what you are looking to do by richening up the mixture. The SERT and PC III do a bit more but are un necessary on a street bike unless you just try to squeeze every last ounce of power out of the engine which most don't try to do.
Ditto on what BG Weasel and the others say. Had one on the last two bikes. They do what they say and it saves you lots of $$$$$. You have any questions about them call George at Dobeck. You can do it yourself.
