Ask them if you can have the old starter back. You're entitled to it. See what they say. Sure sounds like it was just the solenoid. Might even tell them you're going to test it or have someone check it out. If nothing else, they may adjust the price down. Good luck.
Yeah, if you can get it back repair it yourself and sell it on ebay as used and get some of your cash back.
Today went out for a ride and my started did not want to work when I stopped for gas. It was just clicking hard once every time I hit the button. Got it jump started and took it do the dealer, they tested the battery which I just replaced and said it was good, 560 CCA out of it, charging system was fine. Starter worked fine for the rest of the day. Now it has done this before but that was what made me change the 6yr old battery, makes me wonder if I should be looking at the plunger? Any thoughts?
I have a 2007 Road Glide and I just had the 15,000 mile service and the day after my starter and battery needed to be replaced. The battery was reading low-good and the starter was making that vacuum sound when trying to start. The Parts Mgr said it was definitely the starter and battery, I could see the battery was low, but I hardly ride this bike enough for the starter to go bad that fast. It looks like I was probably taken for a ride.
Was wondering what's the average lifespan for a starter? I've got an '03 Fatboy and the starter just went out on me. I've had the bike for 5 years and 50,000 miles.
Thanks.
All the way up until it quits working!
In most cases it is the starter drive clutch, as mentioned before. If it makes the whirring or spinning sound, it is not the solenoid.
I started having problems with my starter on my 08 Ultra with 32k miles. When the bike was warm it would be a 50/50 if it would start or would sound like a grinding. I decided just to change the starter with a dragon high performance starter. I haven’t had any issues since. I still have the old starter, maybe ill look into what is wrong with it and fix it
In the future, at the dealer, figure in $100 a hours for labor.
If you do what you can here, parts are cheap. Even contacts are available and clutches. Your time may be or not worth $100 a hour. Mine is woth about 50 cents.
Depending on the person, now-a days, to replace these parts individually may cost, at the dealer, more that the whole thing.
Lot of young Techs might not know you can, cause they never did.
Seems like yesterday when all I ever did was replace the little parts. To everything I owned.
