How long does one last? I have 35000 miles onmy 93 fatboy. I have Crane single fire....bought it used but have put on a good 500 miles on it and no problems.........then the other day it was craping out and as long as I kept it above 2000 rpms I could get home but under 2000, it was popping and missing like I was running out of gas......but made it home....took it off and put my old igniton back on and it ran fine......Called Crane and they said that my regulator may be going bad and the Crane module was very sensetive to electical spikes......they did say that I could send it back and they would check it out and if it was bad would allow me to buy another one at cost but they would see for sure if the module was my problem......but in the mean time was to check my regulator voltage output first......So my question is that is this a common problem with the regulators? I am planning on a road trip and one of the bro's on here suggested to replace it as I have gone thru every thing else preparing for this trip.
it's been a problem for me! 1987 FLT. The original plug on those had tiny connector pins that would corrode and burn. I replaced the first by mistake (long story) I've been through maybe 7 in 80,000 miles and switched to a 32 amp alternator (like yours) last fall. Bought in a kit and the regulator started charging WFO.
OK, the last 4 or 5, including the one in the kit, were made overseas. My parts dealer got to where he's just lay one on the counter every other time I came in for an oil filter because that's about how long they lasted!
last one I bought was a Compufire brand (made in USA) and uses a series type circuit for regulation rather than the others which use a shunt type circuit. (don't ask me to explain - I'd be here all day!
Long story short, I've only got 30 days on the Compufire, so I cannot attest to the longevity, but whatever you do, buy one from HD or at least a brand made in the USA for quality sake. And, if you're worried about the trip, buy 2, a good one and a cheap one and carryone with you - cheap insurance!
And thank you for helping me decide whether I wanted a single fire ignition. After all the reg problems over the years, I've not replaced one piece of the stock ignition system so I'm sticking with it!
I've got a '99 FXSTC with 57,000 miles on it and just replaced the regulator. It made my speedo go all haywire. put on the new reg and she's back up to snuff!
