Intermittent Shutdown
However, after riding back into Washington State and down the coast of Oregon and across California I was riding east through Fallon, Nevada around noon and it was at least 90 deg. and there was stop and go traffic and the bike just shut off, no electrical power at all. It was easy to tell because I have a digital speedo/tach/voltmeter etc. and it went blank. So I pulled to the side of the road and cycled the switches and it lit back up after a minute or so and started but wouldn't idle at all for about ten minutes. I got to a gas station and filled up and took about ten minutes deciding if I am going to ride 101 miles of hot desert to the next town which is in the opposite direction of nearest Harley dealer. So I took off across the desert and it ran perfect all the way to Ely Nevada over 200 miles east. and then the next day home to Ogden, Utah with no further problems. But then I went on a ride where I was going 40 mph for an about six miles in 90 deg. heat and it shut down again on me and lit back up after a minute and then cycling the ignition and the kill switch with the same problem idling for a few minutes got to the place I was going had dinner and a beer and road home down the freeway into town with not problem until I got off and had to ride across town which takes about 10 minutes and it shut down when I was going a steady 40 as before. So, I first didn't think it was the main circuit breaker due to the idling thing, but the schematic shows the voltage regulator going to the main circuit breaker so I am thinking it maybe took some power fluxuation when the system was burning out which weakened the breaker causing it to trip under stressful conditions. So I changed the regulator and took it for the same ride that caused it to trip the other day with the same temp etc. and had no problem.
My Dakota Digital speedo has a voltage indicator that was showing 13.8 to 13.9 before I changed the breaker and it now reads 14.1 to 14.3 while riding.
Anybody know if I can feel confident that the problem is fixed or am I being optimistic.
Good luck
