Check Engine Light
With some great advice from a few of the members on pipe installation torque values I was able to complete my upgrade yesterday.
Installed the SE Stage 1 Air kit, Porker Switchblades (Vance & Hines)and a Fuelpak on my 03 FXST with EFI.
Punched in the settings and went riding.
Out for a couple hours and the bike was running great. Just about a mile from home while sitting at a stop light Inoticed my check engine light wascoming on intermittently. Can't honestly say for sure, but when it was on the bike seemed to idle a little rougher, but not 100% sure it wasn't just imaginary. This happened 3 or 4 times, only on for a couple seconds each time. When I got home, I gave it a couple of minutes. Switched on the ignition on again. Fuel injection system primed, all seemed okay, butwhen I tried to start, it half cranked and went dead.
Pulled the seat and found my negative battery bolt had loosened about 1 - 1 1/2rotations. Tightened it up, metered the battery and tried again. Bike fired up fine. Gave it a couple tries and no probs.
Now I've noticed the checkengine light comes on (red) for the 4 seconds, goes off for 4 seconds and then comes on again for 8 seconds. According to the manual, thismeans a functional error is stored (although no current trouble code exists).
I have owned the bike since November, but this was only the second time riding it after the winter.
The questions I have are:
Is the check engine light always red?
Could the problems with the initial check engine light during my ride be a result of the loose battery connection?
And, could the Functional error, causing the check engine light to come on again for the 8 seconds, also be a result of this?
Am going to get it in to a tech as soon as I can as I am worried that it maybe related to my upgrades. But am almost convinced that it is related to the battery connection because the bike just ran so well for the 70 - 100 miles I put on it.
