Default SERT questions

I have a SERT that I bought but never installed. Do I have to upload a map before it can be installed? Can I make only minor changes to what's already there???

You don't "install" a SERT. You use the SERT to reprogram or "Flash" the ECM.

What you'll do is pick a map on the computer, and using the Race Tuner software, load it into your ECM.

can you make minor changes:

Well, no, but yes.

You can't read the MAP that is loaded to your ecm. The SERT is a write only device. So what you need to do, is pick a map in the SERT software that closely matches what you have done with your bike, cam/displacement/pipes/filter wise, and load it to your ECM.

Then you run it, and make changes you need to the map you are using in your computer. Then you load it back into your ECM. Then make any more changes you need.

It'll make alot more sense when you read the manual. Be sure to read it and understand it before you do anything.

Good luck.

Read the manual, read it 2-3 times. Think about it awhile.

I loaded the software on my computer in the house. This computer is Vista so I can't use it to program but I can use it to look and see. Also I printed out the instructions and punched 3 holes in the paper and binded them up. Then I can get comfortable reading. Bought an old refurbished laptop with windows 2000 on it to tune with.

You can then do anything you want to do with the ECM But you MUST study on this whole process (The Engine and The Fuel Injection) and understand what is going on. You tune as you would a carborator except you use different tools to get the desired results. And you can get very good results. The though process is the same I have found.

Good Luck

You can.

Warm up the bike 20 min. rideHook up theSERT to laptop. Start the, "DATA MODE", program. Turn the bike switches on. In the Data Mode File select, "RECORD DATA". A new thing will pop up and ask what to save it to. Say anything, date, time, etc. Select, 'START'. Load up the laptop and SERT and ride around.

Make sure the laptop battery is full charged.

Do the kind or things to bring out the numbers to look for, Temp and Spark Retart say. Some 4-5 gear low RPM roll ons are good if you can fine a good place to do that. Full throddle stuff. Watch the speed limits.

When you get back or when you think long enough stop and open the laptop and select, "STOP". At file select, "SAVE". That saves the ride.

I look at MAP, throddle position, RPM, Temp and spark retard if there is any and where. There are other things, I think about 30 recordings. Can graft also any of them

Some of you guys are obviously more tech oriented than me. I'd just take it to the dealer and get the bike on the dyno and have the SERT set up, costs about $200.

That may be true for some but I ain't no computer whiz. My first computer was the onein my Hogand contrary to some we have a pretty decent dealer and service guys up here Saskatchewan who don't try to sell you something you don't need...thats in Canada for you geographically challenged types. I do all the other work needed on my bike and that is fun. But the EFI stuff is way over my head.

I understand what you mean Gum.

I wouldn't even have a clue if a long time ago when my boy,God resthis soul, turned 16, in 1987, and I got him a old car, a 1980 Cutless. Unbeknowste to me that was the first car with a computer and only in California, Hell we live in Texas. Got it home and, CHECK ENGINE light on the dash. WTF is that?NOBODYaround had ever heard of this stuff, even dealers. Got the, "Flying W".
Welcome to the modern world, like it or not I figured.

But seriously, I'm 72 and can do it just a little. You young guys will need to be able to get around this stuff, not going away. Keep the mind open.

BVBOB is right. Just another thing on our bikes to work with. Fancy Carborator I like to think. Sorta.
