I used a V-twinboard about 3 years ago. Not sure if this was it or not. Anyway........I just bought a'86 ST and the brake light is not working. No turn signals at all (something else I'll have to fix). They have been removed from the bike.
So I put a new bulb in.......what's next to check? I'm new toactually working on the bike.
RE: First post - Brake light not working. Need Help.
The first thing to do is the one thing that everyone that asks for help is told.
Get a Harley-Davidson Service and Parts manual for your bike.
Then check the circuit breakers.
Do neither front or rear brake light switches work?
Is there power to the bake light switches?
Does the tail light work?
That will keep you busy for a while.
Then check back.
RE: First post - Brake light not working. Need Help.
I got the Clymer book for the bike but not the HD book. Do I need that one too?? I found a wire disconnected under the oil tank. I think it might be the rear switch. I reconnected the wire and looked at the wiring block under the seat. The wire that should be coming from the rear switch isn't there for some reason.
I'm learning this as I go here. I need to get a low voltage light to check these things I suppose. Ihave a multimeter.I just bought this bike and I'm trying to get it legal.
Thanks for the help. Please keep it up! Trying to do this myself instead of paying someone else to fix it. I need to learn how anyway!

Brake lights are controled by a hydraulic switch usually located on the right side down low on a bracket attached to the transmission. Two wires plug into it. Jump the two wires and if the light works replace the switch. The brake light is also controled by a switch operated by the brake lever on the handle bar. If the lever perch and the switch housing get seperated the switch will not make contact. Loosen the screws and push the perch and switch housing toward each other.
