Default Light Switch

I'd like to be able to switch off the lights on my bike, especially for starting. It's a UK FLHR '99 Twin-Cam. There's no legal requirement to ride with lights on here. I wonder if the loom etc is already there somewhere (for other markets) and I just need a switch ?

You can do it without going into the wiring harness by mounting a toggle switch to the headlight shell and splicing into the ground wire .(black one) It interupts the lighting circuit both low and hi beams when it is thrown to the off position. I've done it with the switch located in the rear of the shell at the bottom where it is accessible but not an eye sore. You can also check the back of the ignition switch for a "U" shaped jumper wire between terminals. On the older bikes, a lot of them had this jumper to give you the lights on feature in all positions and by removing it you would only have lights on when the switch is full over to the right. In a 99 it may not be there.

Sounds easy, couple of questions though.. Does the black wire "trick" still apply to an '06 dyna or is it another color? Do ya need a high amperage switch? And does the tail light go out on this circuit?

thanks from Oz

Wire color should still be the same on the 06's. A typical 15 amp switch from radio shack will be more than enough to handle it. Maybe get the rubber boot that screws over the finger to seal things up. Usually you can get those in a boating supply store. The tail light should be un affected by the switch.

If in doubt of the ground wire look for where the ground comes out of ther headlight bulb plug and follow it. It is usually a local ground.

I guess you could do the same sort of thing to the tail light but you'd have to splice into the feed wire 'cause if you did the earth you'd lose the brake light function. Sorry that's really a question I'm kind of 'thinking outloud' here. Could you use the same switch for both if you ran wires to the headlight shell or would that be connecting a live to earth and blow something up ?
