Default Removing the ECM

I'm in the process of trying to upgrading the ECM my 07 SG to T-max. As Part of the directions for installation, you have to remove the old ECM. As luck would have it, the piece of plastic the ECM is mounted to has bolts molded into it. Sadly, the molding has given way around one of the bolts and I can't get the ECM free from this mounting piece. Has anyone else run into this problem and how did you get past it?

I swear, if it's not one thing, it's another!!! grrrr...

My TMax instructions said something about dropping something around the "posts" that would glue them in and then try again to remove them. Check the manual closely or call Zippers.

I have an older set of directions and don't remember seeing that. (of course i could just be blind! It wouldn't be the first time I've come to that realization....)

I pulled the latest directions and see where this is mentioned. When I was playing with this earlier tonight, I had tried that (mostly out of habit) and still was not able to get them to break free.

I may be in "bad" spot now... Things that I tried included:

1) A set of vice grips applied over the fitting in hopes that I could clamp it down tight enough to back the bold out. No luck

2) I drilled a small hole through the plastic and into the bolt in hopes that I could hold it still. No luck with that either.

About the only thing I can think of now is to drill the thing out.

Any other ideas? I swear, things always have to be such a pain! <sigh>

Thanks for input. I do appreciate the reminder that I need to be looking at the latest set of directions for any gotchas!

You might want to just remove the caddy. It won't directly get the ecm out of it, but it will make it much easier to work on.

I thought I would just close this thread out in case someone else ran into the same problem.

I was able to split the head of the hex bold holding the ECU in place. Once that was done, i could remove the ECU. With that out of the picture, I took a hammer to the stud that was left behind and pounded out the brass fitting that and spun loose in the plastic. I replaced that fitting with a threaded bolt that had a rubber boot around it that i picked up and Lowes.

Hopefully no one else runs into this problem.

Don't forget to give us a running synopsis of your Tmax installation if you have the time... curious minds would like to know.

Hey Buddy,

Just finished reading your thread on removing the ECM in order to replace with a Thundermax. I am having the exact same issue right now and was wondering if you could clarify your statements below.

"I replaced that fitting with a threaded bolt that had a rubber boot around it that i picked up and Lowes."

I am having a tough time picturing how you fixed this by using a threaded bolt that had a rubber boot around it. Please help. Did you happen to take any pictures?

Thanks,

Mike
