FXE Electrical Problem

Ok, well this may be a little different than your normal issues. My dad has a 79 FXE stroker. He had a problem about a month ago where he was riding it hard on the highway and it backfired then shutdown. he thought there may have been an issue with his valves, so i brought it to my house and we tore it down. he took the rocker boxes and had them checked out and we put everything back together from the jugs up. while it was tore down i rewired it. the electrical was a mess from years of someone cutting and splicing and whatever else you can imagine. i put everything back to the way it was but just with new wiring and cleaned it up. it still has the 30 amp delay fuse block on it. well after we were done, well so we thought, we turned the key on and the lights and horn worked fine, we then placed it in the run position and fired her up. keep in mind this also has an electric starter too. she fired up fine and sounded great. so after a few of her warming up and making sure there was plenty of oil up top, he took her for a test run. he made it out the neighborhood to the main road. once he got on the main road i heard him get on it and then two backfires followed by a single backfire and then i heard nothing. well we pushed her back to the garage and started troubleshooting. seems like the same issue that started all this... well anyway i noticed everytime i put the key in the accessory position, the lights and horn still work. as soon as i turn to key to the run position, the delay fuse pops. i thought it might be the fuse so i took it out and wired in an inline fuse. it popped it the same way. so now i am at a lose for ideas at this point.
im asking if anyone has any ideas or possibly has heard of the same thing?
also does anyone have the wiring diagrams out of the old jammer catalogs? Thanks
