I had a similar problem with my bike, the immobiliser was draining the charge from the battery, try fully re-charging the battery first. (The noise you hear that sounds like the starter giving up is more than likely solenoid chatter caused by low power)
The problem only seems to happen if I haven't started the bike for a coulpe of days. It doesn't always happen after a couple of days, just once in a while. It may be my imagination but it seems like it is colder mornings, not extermely cold just colder. That is usually when I'm going to ride. I take it to work and leave early. Again this only happens once in a while.
I will check the battery first and re-do the connections to all points battery, starter...etc. But if they check out OK and the problem still exists, I guess I will be replacing the starter.
I hate intermediate problems. Hard to find they are[:@]
If you have a volt meter, clamp, or attach it to the battery, check the voltage as you hit the start button. It should stay up around 12-14v, if it drops to say 6v or something low like that, I would replace the battery and check the charging system, if it stays around 12-14 but does not crank, I would find the soliniod wire (not the thick battery cable) on the starter, check that you are getting 12-14v while pushing the starter button, if not you have problems with connection, switches, (kill or ignition), alarm, etc. If you do have good voltage to the solinoid, and good ground at the starter and power to the battery cable (thick cable) at the starter, I would replace the starter. Hope this helps, good luck!
Im having the same problems! Ive a 1992 electra. My battery is brand new. When I hit the starter button. You can hear the selinoid do its thing but the starter wont turn. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt. When I hit the starter buttton,(which is also brand new) looking at my gauges on my dash you can notice a big draw, amperage draw. If I tap the starter house with a screw driver handle. It starts sometimes. All my electrical connections are clean and checked. If I put a charger on and keep it running when I hit the starter button, it will start. Some mentioned starter clutch. Where the hell is that thing? I've a 1800 mile ride to sturgis coming up. I realize everyone can specutlate on what to check. BUt I would preferre someone that can tell me exactly what to look for or to replace.
All good advice so far. If tapping the starter helps, as zoood does, then the starter needs to be rebuilt/replaced. What happens is the bearings wear and the shaft has room to pull to one side instead of spinning.
