Installing SERT
Would a fairly handy and computer savy person be able to do it?
I just ordered one and am expecting delivery any day and would like to be as hands on as possible with my bike.
Are there any reasons that I should not install it myself?
It is going into a Softail Deluxe. I have been having probs with the set up i have and was told that the PC III or the SERT would solve my issues. I found such a good deal on the SERT I had to take it. At this point it may be a bit of over kill but it will also grow with the bike.
ANy input or advice would be great.
I have to ride 3 hrs to the nearest shop with a Dyno so I am wondering how close I can get with just a laptop until i can get the bike tuned in properly.
I am far from a computer geek, but I had no trouble at all loading the stage one settings into my bike. I was amazed how fast it went.
You should be able to find a file close, if not exact for your modifications. Once you get into the data section, it is easy enough to figure out. If they dont list a file that is exactly for your build,,,go to the next closest one. Bottom line if you want the best out of it, you will probably want to have it dynoed as long as you can find a good dyno tuner, thats a whole different subject. There are places on the net that will sell you a map for your build. It is rather pricey, though the prices I saw were less than a dyno tune. Some of the forums also have maps listed you can download. If the SERT has your build listed though, just go with that as a staring place. Mine was close with some minor popping issues that is easy enough to correct, the help section even tells you how to adjust that out.
Hope this helps

find a message - SERT Users Manuals
You can download a sert manual and start going thru that.
I#m waiting on mine as well, and have been chewing thru as many manuals as can find in meantime and its a great help.
thanks to whoever added those. ...TCSTD addded them.
can anyone tell me where the plug for the interface is typically located ??? Cause someday I'd like to plug it in and explore.

You can get them at Circuit City and Best Buy. I got mine at CC. It is a Belkin and works great. Cost $32.76 and that includes tax.
Install the drivers before you hook it up to the laptop.
Install the software, both the tuning mode and data mode. Shut down and take everything to the motorcycle.
Behind the fuse cover is a plug that has a rubber plug in it. the whole thing will slide one way to come off the fuse box. Remove the rubber plug and connect the sert cable.
Hook up everything else. The plugs only go one way. Now power up the laptop. Make sure the run switch is on and turn the key to on.
Double click the data mode and click accept. When it gets open if it doesn't open a window asking to name a file, go to file/ record data and the window will come up.
Name the file and click ok. Put it where you want it. I used the test data folder.
Now go up to the menu and select com port. Pull down and select the com port the sert is on. Mine is on Com 5.
You should see com port open in the second line of the window.
Now click on Get ECM data. You should see information populate the windows. It will include the vin of your mc.
Crank the mc and click on the record start button. Let the MC run for a few seconds and turn it off. Click the record stop button.
Minimize the record window and your data should be in the view window.
That's as far as I have got.
