Default Road King Problems

I had a sportster one time that when it got hot it would just miss and cut out act really bad. Ended up being the igintion modular. Well I have a friend now who ride a 1999 Road King and his is acting the same way only his does have to be hot or cold. And it comes and goes. Misses, back fires, spits have to gear down and just hammer it wide open to clear it out and then maybe down the road it will run just like new. Any ideas?

THANKS

Welcome to the forum. Just hang around a bit and you will get some good info. I can't be of much help, but there is plenty of knowledge here.

If it's injected change engine temp sensor. That should do the trick.

Before just replacing an expensive sensor, shouldn't it be diagnosed?

sure if you know the value of the sensor and can keep test leads on while increasing and decreasing temperature to the sensor while knowing nominal values at those temperatures, or you could get the harley scanner or most other good scan tools that will give you the sensors readings while operating so you can see which one is not operating correctly, although intermittants are really hard to diagnose. Not trying to be fasicious here but it takes a lot to actually troubleshoot a sensor. What i was giving you was experience talking. By the way a pretty good scanner is the daytona twin scan, it pretty much gives you a lot of the information I just talked about for about $150.00, I think that was the price. Hook up your laptop to it and it will even give you an estimated afr if you don't have O2 sensors.

Hi, David. Had an 88 Sporty myself that acted like yours. Turned out to be the ignition coil. Assuming your friend's RK is fuel injected, look also for broken wires to the injectors. I've heard of that happening on some FI bikes, usually affects the front cylinder, if I remember correctly.
