Hopefully someone can help here! I have an '06 Duece with V&H Stepped Drag Pipes and Fuel Pak. Bike has been running great up till now. The issue is that at low idle, say first or second gear as I roll on the throttle the bike coughs and almost dies. It then picks up and seems to go away. Next time I am down at the low end throttle position, does it again. The other issue is that taking off from red lights or after stops, the bike coughs again but out the air cleaner with a nice pretty white cloud! I have been to the stealer a couple of times and the service manager keeps saying that everything is fine. I disagree because even when I am at higher throttle positions, it feels as though I'm pulling a trailer or something and all of the sudden it'll open up and run as we expect them to. I read the M1185 bullitin about injectors, but when i mentioned this to the service manager he said that doesn't relate to softail models. I'm lost, any suggestions.
I have a '06 FLSTCI that was shipped with the 8* injectors. I experienced similar symptoms to what you are describing. I had to go to two dealerships and speak directly to the service manager to get any results. The dealer agreed that what I was experiencing was related to the 8* injectors and the fact that the HD download that was installed during stage one was the "street legal" version when I should have received the "race" version.
It took a month for the dealer to get the 25* injectors in, then another 2 months for the "race" cartridge. Once the install was done, the bike ran much smoother and stronger. The low RPM roll-on in first gear is considerably smoother (it's still a V-twin) with top end performance about the same.
If you read the service bulliten, it states "all big V-twins". I would call B.S. on that not applying to a Duece. Also consider that all '06 bikes produced after the bulliten shipped with 25* injectors as will all '07 bikes. The 8* injectors are no more!!!
Either go to another dealer, or call the HD customer service line and complain. If you call HD, make sure you give them the dealer's name and the name of the service tech that said it didn't apply to your bike. I would push them until they agree to do the upgrade. If calling HD, you may want to be cautious in describing your set-up. Having the fuel pak and the pipes installed may make them reluctant to accept responsability for the way your bike is running. Of course, if you saved your stock parts, you can always go back to stock, take it in and complain, get the new injectors, then reinstall the fuel pak and pipes.
Also, check your primary chain adjustment. A loose primary chain can cause the bike to struggle at low RPM.
P.S - I would recommend a performance exhaust system over drag pipes any day (MHO).
Hey, thanks for the reply. Just went to the dealer again and spoke to one of the service guys. His initial response was to just drop the bike off and they would look at it to see if the settings were correct. I then explained my problems again and mentioned that i was aware of the 8 degree vs. 25 degree issue. I asked him if this only pertained to certain models. He said no, that it is to include all big twin models, even the softail/duece class. He then said that more than likely, that is the problem as they have replaced a lot of them. As for the drag pipes, not even going to argue with you. You are absolutely correct.
I have an '06 deuce that had the 8* injectors. I had symptoms similar to that which you describe. My dealer swapped them out for me and it has made a huge difference. The dealer may hassle you on the mods though. As suggested, you may want to swap back to stock parts before taking a stand with the dealer.
