I have a 06 Ultra Classic with 4300 miles. While riding yesterday the amber check engine light and red battery light came on two different times towards the end of a 250 mile ride they were on for a very short time each time then went out. So I rode a short ride this morning to see if it would repeat itself. After about 20 miles they came on again and are now staying on the volt gauge is staying between 11.5 and 12 and not moving at all as you rev the motor. Does this sound like the stator. I am calling the dealer in the morning and hoping for the best I have a 1200 mile ride planned on labor day weekend I am hoping it is fixed by then. Thanks for any help.
My 06 Ultra Classic had similar problems. The odometer would also display partial characters, the check engine light and security key would flash on and off. After several trips to the dealer it finally displayed an error code. They ended up replacing the speedometer. This happened at about 3500 miles. It now has 7500 on it and all is well.
Your voltmeter should show around 14 volts while riding. If your charging system has a problem and is not charging the battery that could cause the other lights to go on. It could be the stator, regulator or wiring but you sure have low mileage to be having those problems. There are a lot of stator failures.
Could be. Once again check the output from the stator first while it is connected by stabbing the wires with straight pins and then connecting a digital multi-meter to read a.c. volts. You should see 50 - 60 volts a.c. when rev'ed up. If there is output let it run at a high idle for at least 10 minutes to make sure it continues to work when hot. If output from the stator is good it then could be the regulator but check the wiring around the regulator bracket for shorts.
Put a dab of silicone on the stab holes to prevent oil from leaking out.
same symtpoms I had, turned out to be the regulator. Tech had a hard time diagnosing it using the software/computer setup. Took it in first time killed it out front, when I pulled it around code was still set saying low voltage or someting but regulator was working fine. I left, went got lunch, on the way home it did it again, took it back never killed it just pulled it right in backdoor of shop. he hooked up laptop, went through a few steps, computer told him to hook up some pigtail between the ECM and main wiring harness, had to kill it to do that, when he did, the check engine light went out and stayed out. By then I guess he had become convinced it had to be the regulator, said if it was the stator it would not work then quit then work again it would go out and stay out. next day they replaced the regulator and its all been good for for last couple of months so must have been it.
Actually, my stator would work for about 10 minutes and when it got hot it would open up and quit. I was about to buy a regulator when something told me to test it longer. I hooked up my meter, set a high idle and walked away for a while. In a few minutes I heard the engine rev up as the stator let go. Yes, they do come and go. Probably in the early stages of failure but I bet mine did that for at least several rides. I am still using the same regulator a year later. This is why I stress testing the stator while hooked up for at least 10 minutes.
Went to dealer yesterday rode 55 miles to dealer no warning lights. Dealer took bike in checked system on computer and said it had a low battery voltage code stored in it but the battery and everything checked out fine. The service tech says he thinks it was a false code/glitch in the system. Rode 55 miles home no problems. Rode about 70 miles today after 20 miles the warning check engine light and battery came on again and the volt gauge was at about 12 this lasted about two miles then no more problems during the ride. Guess I will be calling the dealer back on Monday.
