Well the other day I was out riding and all of sudden my bike just died. I was able to start it again while coasting and continued on my trip. About 30 miles later it started to stall/stutter on occasion. At mile 40 it was almost nonstop then died. The battery was so dead that even the milage display was blank. I ended up trailering it back home. The battery is a 20A battery about 1 year old that I had tested at auto zone and came back fine. I have checked the ground and positive wires from the battery and they seem fine and I have looked at the connections at the regulator also and all seem ok. While running I tested the alternator at 14.2V. Today while trying to check out voltages the first time i went to start it, it clicked and went dead. Tried 2 sec later and started right up but fuel pump is kinda making a grinding noise. Now I am wondering if maybe it is a shortage somewere instead. If anyone has any ideas please help. Thanks
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a battery with a dead or dying cell. My best advice would be to log onto the East Penn Deka website and find their number and call them to find your local distributor. They make all the batteries for HD.( about $35 cheaper) Get the one for your bike and have it trickle charged and install. Be sure to pull your maxi fuse before removing/installing the battery.
Then go on Amazon and search for Deltran motorcycle battery tender and buy the 12v on (about $27). Deltran makes the HD tender. It will come with a pigtail plug that wires directly to the battery terminals so you can "plug in" the tender harness while your bike sits and keep the battery fully charged. I ran my pigtail through the back of the battery box and it sticks out behind the fuse box on the left side. Be sure to tie wrap the pigtail to the frame under the seat so it doesn't flop around too much.
This will extend your battery life substantially. If you have any questions, PM me. Once you have new AGM battery if the problem persists then there is more to troubleshoot. But my guess is your battery is a goner.
Well thanks for the help. I took my dads battery out of his 2010 cvo softail and have rode 50 miles with no problems. Whats odd is that auto zone tested it and it tested fine. My brother is a mechanic and today he took the battery to his work to test it and it also tested good. Guess ill have to try riding another 60+ today and see. Just not sure why it would test good but so far seems like thats the problem.
Are they doing a load test? You can test it yourself by getting a voltmeter and testing the battery while starting. At first it should read 12-13.While starting,if it drops dramatically(say, reading 4-5) it has a dead cell.
