I have a 2001 Road King Classic with a bad ECM. I am running a PC III usb. Can I take a used ECM from a running (salvage) bike and install on my bike? If so what will need to be done to make it work? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice. Stew

Yes you can as long as it is the same model (touring) and close to the same year. If it is a MM EFI then that too must match. You can't switch Delphi and MM EFI ECM's. Check the HD part number that is on your ECM and go by that. You should be fine. If you aren't sure if you have the MM or Delphi, look at the throttle body butterfly. If there is one butterfly that is Delphi, two is MM.
The only other issue is... the salvaged ECM will need to be flashed with your VIN # by a dealer. That's easy and it only takes a few minutes to do. If your ECM has the stock map then the dealer can flash the stock map into the salvaged one. If you don't do this and the salvaged ECM has a Stage (X) flash then your PC III map will be off.
Thank you Mr. Wizard. I have located one from the same year, make and model. both are MM. Only problem I can think of now is that I have no idea what stage (x) either one is.... I got my bike used from a dealer and little is known other than what can be seen. It does have a K&N air filter, and was and is running pipes with no baffles. other than that, I do not know for certain what else has been done.
I do know that someone modified the stock exhaust headers by blocking off the crossover pipe........
Don't know about 2001 vintage but the programed number for later models can be read by the dealer and that may give you an idea what is in it. If your bad ECM is so toasted it won't boot up, well I dunno... You may just have to have a PCIII tuner that knows the MM retune everything on a dyno.
I am planning on seeing which map is loaded on the PCIII and use that as a guide for what the setup on the bike is. It has run pretty good the way it has been for the last year and 12000 miles. It was just a little rich at idle, but I should be able to determine if the map was for stage I or stock ecm and go from there...... Am out of town working for right now.. will update when I get back home......
