I have a 1989 Flt dresser that was running real good >>one day in the afternoon the tach needle started jumping around from real low to real high and the bike was losing power>the blinkers quit also>made it home and checked out the voltage on the battery>13.4 at rest>with the bike revved up to 2000rpm it reads14.3>> I checked the neg&pos cables they are clean & tight I went ahead and changed out the 30amp main circuit breaker and the 3-15amp cbs that control the ignition the cb for the lights and the 15cb for the accesorys when you turn the ign switch to the ign position the oil pressure and the neutral come on sometime bright sometimes kinda dim then you switch to lights and everything goes dead also when you put it in the ign mode and hit the starter switch it goes dead or trying the blinkers it goes dead I pulled out the ignition switch and the battery post on the switch reads 13.00volts when you switch to ign it drops to 10.8 volts and also 10.8 on the light post of the switch>>>any ideas out there for a cure?? thanks for anyones help
Just a idea but I had a starter problem on my 94 the other day. I had good voltage at the battery, and the starter just clicked. The positive battery cable goes down to the starter where theres a connection. I had good voltage there, but it was rusty. I cleaned it up and it starts like a 07 again. Also theres a ground on the rear starter bolt that could possibly be a problem. Dont know if it'll help you but it took me 3 hours to figure it out. Only after i dropped the primary..
IT turned out to be my battery>>Sears ran a load test and the battery was no good no more after about 11-12 hours of electrical trouble shooting I stumbled into the answer >> when you would put the ignition switch on--- the volts at the battery would drop down to 4.3 volts>> if anyone out there is having electrical problems I would suggest you put a load test on the battery first>> it might save you alot of work and time and especially some HEADACHES>>>also any battery over a year or year and 1/2 old is suspecttable because heat & vibrations take thier toll>> I hope this info will help someone out there
